What's New at Dogpile.com?

Been to Dogpile lately?

InfoSpace, Inc. announced today key upgrades to improve the user experience at Dogpile.com, the search site that combines the top results from the leading search engines. These changes are based on extensive research and feedback from users.

What's New?
  1. Improvements in the way that results are blended together from multiple sources, offering you a more relevant search experience.
  2. A visually enhanced homepage equipped with tabbed search categories, 'Quick Starts' for easy access to tools such as SearchSpy, and a 'Favorite Fetches' section that lists the day's top-searched terms.
  3. An easy-to-read search results page that has been simplified and streamlined based on eye-tracking research and other scientific data. The new results page includes related articles and recent searches clearly listed in a side-bar.
  4. The launch of a SearchSpy social networking widget which allows users to catch a real-time glimpse from their personal start pages at Netvibes or iGoogle of what the world is searching for on Dogpile.com.
  5. Deep links within search results directing users to specific sections of a Web site in addition to the homepage.
  6. New partner content that is integrated into traditional search results to enable visitors to more easily discover relevant information.

Top 10 Green Search Engines

Earth Day is a time to focus on ways we can help protect our planet. One of the easiest ways you can 'Go Green' is to use an eco-friendly search engine. In that spirit, I've my picks for the Top Ten Green Search Engines available online today. Give them a try!

  1. Green Maven is a search engine designed to specifically search the "green web." They focus on helping you find the best green, conscious, and sustainable web sites.
  2. Ecocho is a green search engine, which is essentially a wrapper over Yahoo search. The site gives its users the opportunity to contribute to the purchase of carbon offsets by performing searches. For every 1000 searches, Ecocho grows two trees. They are not a charity, though - 30% of their revenue goes to running costs.
  3. Blackle takes Google, and turns off the lights. By using a black background, Blacke saves energy since monitors require more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen. How much energy is saved? Blackle claims that a black Google would save 750 Megawatt-hours per year.
  4. Like Blackle, searchgreener has a black background to use less energy. They also donate all profits to the purchase of carbon offsets.
  5. Another black-background search engine, Eco-find also uses Google search.
  6. Because apparently, we can't have enough darkened engines, Earthle also conserves energy.
  7. The tagline at EcoSeek is "the search engine for all things green," but unlike Green Maven, EcoSeek is a product search focused engine. The site helps educate buyers and connect them to eco-friendly products, manufacturers, and retailers.
  8. Another green search engine is Greensie, whose mission is to "organize and deliver the world's best information about green."
  9. Greenona is yet another green-focused engine that helps you connect with green resources on the web. Their site features many stats, like a large tag cloud of the past 500 searches and the top 100 clicked results.
  10. Another attempt at a green-focused engine is Green Link Central. Every link is hand-picked by human editors.
